People say we don't make anything in the UK anymore. Nonsense.
This morning, James Cleverly MP visited Swann Engineering in Braintree, a world-class steel fabricator with decades of experience.
But Labour's steel tariff policy is letting them down.
The Government has increased tariffs on imported unfabricated steel from 25% to 50%, but there is a massive loophole. If a foreign company fabricates the steel into finished products first, it can be imported into the UK completely tariff free.
That means foreign competitors can undercut businesses like Swann Engineering with no penalty at all.
Poorly thought through. Poorly implemented. Labour's steel tariff is hitting the very businesses it was supposed to protect.
